September 2015

August was a busy month for the Historical Society.  We had 38 guests at the Baugh House.  Every year the attendance doubles.  Joannís Pickup Band was delightful as usual.  She is so much fun every venue, she also plays at May Festival and Cider days, We always get to meet one or two delightful and talented new musicians this year we met a lovely lady who played our 1903 Piano in the parlor. She is also a piano tuner and offered to tune our two pianos.  We are very excited to have this done.  Thanks guys for some great Blue Grass Music.

We had a tour the Saturday of the Carnation Festival from the folks at the Colorado History Museum. They delightful and we hope they return again soon.  We also had a tour the first week in September from the Phoenix Charter School.  We had 30 4th graders they were delightful. Very well behaved and interested in what we had to say.  I was surprised when they told me that they had all learned to crochet, even the boys.  What a great skill to have.

We had several questions from people who stopped at the Historical Society booth at the Carnation Festival.

1.      What was the old school called across from the Prospect Valley Store on West 38th and Lee St.  From what I could find out in the 60ís it was a school for Development Disable Children.  But I could not find out anything else before that.  I remember the school it was small, but a well built, building of gray brick or stone. If anyone knows more about this school please email us at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

2.      What do we know about ditches in the area?  We have quite a bit of information on the ditches at the museum, please stop by and we .will be glad to help you.

3.      We have a genealogy file at the museum.  Please if you have questions about ancestors come to the museum and we help you find what we have. We get to many requests to research each individual family but you are welcome to look through are files.

We have acquired a very nice old display case that one time belonged to Louise Turner. We are in need of having the glass replaced.  Please contact us if you would be able to help us with this project.

Our September Meeting will be tonight at, Sept. 8th, at the Museum at 7:00 p.m.  I realize this is short notice and I am sorry all of our meetings are the second Tuesday of the month except for July and August when we take a break.  The museum is open every month but December.  We are closed for the Holidays.
