February 2017

Ahhh February, the month of Valentine's Day and Presidents Day, changing weather with sun and wind one day then snow another! Gotta love the shortest month of the year cause once it's done we are closer to Spring!!  Are you experiencing cabin fever? Come on by the Baugh House this Saturday (February 11,  2017 from 10 am to 2 pm) to reminisce about the past, rock in the chairs and listen to great olde-time music. Bring your instruments and/or voice to join in the fun.

We are very sad to announce the death of Frank (Hank) Stites, his memorial was last week. He was  a dear friend to the society. He was a former mayor of Wheat Ridge, "the best parliamentarian we had in the mayor's office" says Claudia Worth, President of the Historic Society. He was very involved with the Carnation Festival, he was always there to listen to his constituents with his open door policy. Our thoughts are with his family at this time of loss.

We did not have a Historic Society meeting this month per our vote last month so our next meeting will be on Tuesday March 14, 2017 7 p.m. social time 7:30 p.m. meeting starts. Each month a member brings refreshments for the meeting, see our list below. As you will note we do not have a volunteer for September so if you would be interested let Jane know at 303-421-9111.  New members welcome, so come join us!!!

The New Year started with confusion on my part as I put the wrong time on our January meeting on the newsletter. At our monthly meeting we had a discussion of the meetings in the winter months when it is dark early and roads can be slick making it tough for members to attend. It was motioned and passed to change the meetings from 7:30 p.m.  to 7 p.m. and no longer having meetings in January and February.

Claudia Worth reported that the insurance for the post office building would be $200 per month and discussion on this and the contract with the city for the historic park was put to a committee which will meet at the Historic park on Wednesday January 18, 2017 at 1:30 p.m.

Our thoughts are with the family of Don Eafanti a long time Wheat Ridge resident, member of the Wheat Ridge Historic Society  and former City Council member. One of Don's contributions to Wheat Ridge was the founding of the Kite Day, originally at Paramount park the event has grown from his idea to have special needs kids enjoy learning to fly kites to the event we see at Anderson park in the spring now. He had a barber shop on 38th for years where locals came to talk about the issues of the day. He will be missed in our community!

We are still in need of a twin mattress for the Baugh house (new or used) please contact Jane Harvey at 303-421-9111. Keep in mind we also collect other antique items for display at the museum. Donations or loans accepted. Remember the Wheat Ridge Historic Society when planning your estate!

Membership dues for the year are only $10 and just $100 for a lifetime membership. Join us in preserving the history of Wheat Ridge for future generations!!! Dues can be paid by cash or check in person at the Historic park during open hours, at Historic Society meetings or by mail. Send to P.O. Box 1833  Wheat Ridge, Co 80034

Looking forward to meeting you at our next meeting in March,

Janet "White" Bradford

Our thoughts are with the family of Dougal Graham a lifetime Wheat Ridge Historical Society member, who recently passed away. His knowledge of Wheat Ridge history will be missed here at the museum. His memorial will be on Tuesday  December 6, 2016 at 11 am at the Saint John's Episcopal church. His passing brought memories of his life to our members who knew of his contribution to the society. I asked if he had done an oral history for the museum. There is an audio of him talking about his family on file at the museum. So we would like to remind families to take the time to talk with family elders, ask about their life, tape record (MP3, cell phone, etc) the conversation to be shared with future generations. I wondered if he had any memoribilia of Wheat Ridges past, this sparked a discussion about leaving your legacy to the Historic Society. As many of you know most of the items in the museum are donated. So keep the Historical Society in mind when you are planning your estate.

. The December Historic Society meeting will be a Holiday Party on Tuesday December, 13, 2016 at the Baugh House 44th & Robb St. Wheat Ridge. 6pm.  There will be music, cookies and a White Elephant gift exchange. We hope you will join us to celebrate the season!!!

The Wheat Ridge Historic Park will be closed for the month of December and will reopen to the public on January 3, 2017.  The next Wheat Ridge Quilting Circle meeting will be January 28, 2017 at 10:30 am to 2:30 pm. The Wheat Ridge Historic Society January meeting will be on January 10, 2016 at 6:30pm at the Red Brick Cottage.

I look forward to meeting current and new members at future events!!!

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays

Janet "White" Bradford

Wheat Ridge Historic Society Vice President
